Business South Welcomes Renewed Focus on Economic Growth and Regional Development
Business South welcomes the Government’s announcement of a refreshed ministerial team, which signals a renewed focus on economic growth, regional opportunities and needed execution of policy. These changes are an encouraging step forward as our region looks to address key challenges and unlock its full potential.
The creation of the Economic Growth portfolio, led by Nicola Willis, is a significant development. Business South will work closely with the Minister to ensure the distinct needs of the regions are considered and prioritised.
The appointment of James Meager recognises the need for greater representation in the South and we are encouraged by this appointment. We are optimistic this additional role will go towards helping to provide the needed additional representation and voice that Southerner's deserve.
Tourism, a cornerstone of our region’s economy, also benefits from focused leadership under Louise Upston. As a key driver of employment and a contributor to the vibrancy of Otago and Southland, the tourism sector requires continued investment and strategic direction to ensure its resilience and growth.
While Dunedin’s hospital build remains an important opportunity for economic development, we acknowledge the frustrations felt by our community due to the delays. We encourage the Government to provide greater clarity and urgency in progressing this essential project, as it will deliver significant benefits not just for healthcare but also for job creation and regional development.
The broader emphasis on infrastructure development, small business support, and energy reform is essential for creating a stable and enabling environment. We encourage the Government to engage with our business community to ensure policies are practical and grounded in the realities faced by those on the ground.
Business South is committed to advocating for businesses across the region, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs represented. We will continue to work collaboratively with all levels of government with a focus on growth and ensuring government understand the needs to businesses within the region.
