Looking Ahead to 2025 - A Word From the BSCO Committee Chair

What a Year it Has Been

2024 has been a challenging year for many businesses, marked by uncertainty and the need for financial prudence. Rising unemployment, economic recessions, increasing food and living costs, global conflicts, strained geopolitical relationships, and significant political changes have been at the forefront of our thoughts. Amid these global concerns, conversations with colleagues and friends often remind us how fortunate we are to call New Zealand—and particularly Central Otago—home.

Yes, there are frustrations at times—the pace of growth and gaps in healthcare services, for example. But let's not forget that we live in one of the best places in the country and world. Central Otago is among the fastest-growing regions, boasts the lowest unemployment rate in New Zealand, and has seen wage increases above the national average.

Our business community reflects this strength and resilience, with 92% of businesses in the region employing fewer than 10 people. Central Otago punches well above its weight, and I’m excited to see what the next 5, 10, and 15 years will bring for our region.

A Big Year for BSCO

This year has been a milestone for Business South Central Otago (BSCO). Membership has grown steadily, and attendance at our BA5 events has more than doubled. Training opportunities have expanded significantly, with strong participation and double the offerings compared to last year.

Our connections with stakeholders—including schools, non-profits, business groups, and local and national government—have deepened, and we've laid a solid foundation for advocacy. Through our quarterly and pulse-check surveys, we’ve seen businesses across the region engage meaningfully, helping us represent their needs more effectively.

Looking Ahead to 2025: The Year of Connection

Our focus for 2025 is Connection. We aim to deepen engagement, foster collaboration, and advocate for changes that enable businesses to grow and thrive. Tailored training will support businesses and their teams, while precise and focused advocacy will help us seize opportunities and navigate challenges. Most importantly, we’ll continue to support one another through what will likely be another tough year—but one filled with potential.

A Heartfelt Thanks

To the BSCO Advisory Committee: your dedication and countless hours of voluntary service to the business community are truly inspiring. Your leadership humbles and encourages me as we move forward together.

To Business South—Amanda, Mike, Lloyd, Shona and John—thank you for your unwavering commitment to this region. Your efforts to stay connected with businesses and drive support have not gone unnoticed. You’ve kept things running smoothly and always pushed for positive change, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

Wishing You All a Wonderful Holiday Season

As we close the year, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and encourage you to enjoy some well-earned downtime. Cherish the moments with your family and friends, and recharge for the year ahead.

Warm regards,
Dewald de Beer
